Information
This page contains notes and diagrams to take to the shoot as well as photos and footage and edits from the shoot.
Day One Tuesday 19th November 2024
I set up my cupboard with the purple card and Aputure mini lights and recorded some product shots using my Sony a6000 and DJI gimbal.
I demoed the footage to a friend who pointed out the reflections were too intense. While I do like the motion and lighting in these shots, the lamps might be too bright. These should be re-shot to reduce the glare and to balance the lighting. We can do this by diffusing the light.
In the shot of the Tesco chocolate bar for example, the label has a white background and yet it is darker than the birghtness of the background. I beleive it would look better to balance these out.

The Colour Purple
As you can see in the early footage, I used purple to signify wealth and luxury. While it may be too saturated (and almost pink) to fully describe that theme, I think it works well - and matches the colour scheme of the cocoa powder too. We can use colour correction in post to adjust if necessary.
Props
We should set up the table and background of shots using other purple items we have available.
Flowers
Chairs
Cereal boxes
Notice board
Curtains
We can use the card if we want to line the background or base of any shots. It might also be possible to bounce the light from some purple card to adjust the colour of a fill light.
Day Two Wednesday 20th November 2024
We managed to film a handful of shots, but not as many as we would have liked. I feel like we spent too much time trying to set it up for perfection - and yet didn't hit the mark.
The recipe book on the counter
Milk pouring from different angles
Chocolate being chopped
Cocoa powder dropping
We used the z150 at first, but found it easier to get into different angles with the a6000 and using the DJI gimbal. This meant we could get some mostly smooth and steady shots, where our use of the slider (for the z150) wasn't the best.
Cutting up the product shots with some clips from the day two shoot.
The footage was perfectly described as a chocolate thirst-trap - you know what, I'll take that.
Day Three Thursday 21st November 2024
We filled in the gaps on our shot list, but still didn't manage to film everything. Similarly to yesterday, I found it difficult to set up shots in the way I imagined. However, we are starting to put together a decent film.
I can already see lots of ways to improve and given that we still have a few weeks before the submission date, we will most likely go back to reshoot a fair amount.
A real rushed throw-together of some of our footage so far.
Note: when re-shooting this, use a diffuser on the lamps as the highlights are too strong and too hot!
Day Four 28th November 2024
Filming the hero shot - a perfect hot chocolate, with cream, marshmellows, topped with an Oreo biscuit. It took a number of takes to get the desired lighting and pour. Getting the close-up required sourcing one of the most important pieces of equipment you'd need - a jug with a spout!
We chose to make the chocolate with only powder and water, rather than the full process so we were no wasting ingredients. It only needed to look like hot chocolate, not necessarily taste the best. In promotional advertising, companies will often dress food to look realistic even if it isn't edible.
Draft Edit - 2nd December 2024
An almost ready to submit edit, excluding the potential re-shoots this week.
Draft Edit - 4th December 2024
Feedback from Viv was to trim some of the clips, change / add transitions and zooms. I experimented with some of his ideas - some are in this cut and some are not. For example, I did remove the crash zoom effect but then opted to keep it.
(also accidently includes a clip at the tail of the edit...)
I presented my work to a friend who is in MA Film, who suggested very similar feedback. She also said to think about the timing and flow - almost like a metronome.
We will be shooting on Thursday 5th December (which is now today) to fix some clips and to fill in the gaps:
Chopping the chocolate (use a black sheet on the chopping board)
Oven timer ding!
Picking up the pan from the hob
Sliding the pan across the hob
File Organisation
Here is a screenshot showing how the files are organised on my hard drive.
Pickups
Re-filming the chocolate chopping sequence with a black cloth on the board to help balance the shot with the rest of the film. It works much better than the plain white chopping board, fixing issues where it appears to bright and distracting.
Day Before the Submission
Likely the penultimate export (if I need to make edits before submission tomorrow).
I recorded some extra sounds on my own to fill in the gaps.
