INTRODUCTION
AN INTRO INTO VISUAL PRODUCTION
Nothing Fancy is nothing more than an attempt to get us used to the equipment. Filming on the streets of Cardiff and Bute Park. A selection of architecture and nature contrasting both sides to the city. Part of our first steps learning to use the Sony z150 and Rode boom microphone.
Rush cut
Identified usable clips from our footage.
Cut down to 1 minute to fit a story
Add temporary sound effects
My intention was to recreate the openeing to the film Baraka, and example that was shown to us. The first shot in Nothing Fancy is a reference to the mountainous first shot in the film. The panning up and down to reveal is also similar.
We recorded multiple takes of the same shots, often repeating the movement back and forth. Most clips were dropped and not used in this video.
When I reviewed the footage and audio I wasn't sure if we'd even be able to create something cohesive. The audio was almost unsuable. Seeing glimpses of other people's work made me doubt the quality of the video. Let's be real, it isnt great and doesn't show off my full potential.
I found myself restricted by the large camera and tripod setup. I am used to pulling out my phone or camera and hitting record whenever. In contrast, the bulkiness of the equipment meant we had to take time to plan and set each shot. Filming run-and-gun was possible, but difficult with the z150 and tripod. Movement had no stabilisation. However, I do understand the purpose of using the industry standard equipment we need to learn. I look forward to improving my skills and booking out the cameras as often as I can - even if I might prefer to use my own little a6000 and gimball!
First edit
Colour grade clips
Re-work sound
Applied cinema crop
Added text and other effects
Most sound effects are still missing.
The edit started to come together once I spent some time in post. Colour grading the clips made a big difference. The change in aspect ratio from 16:9 helps narrow in the audience's focus.
Next steps
Find or film* alternative clips for the squirrel, re-record the sound effects, design alternate title card.
*If we need to record further, we must apply for a permit from Cardiff Film Office and provide an associated risk assessment form and insurance details. Whilst our setup is small (only a camera and tripod), it could pose an obstruction. Applying for a permit allows CFO to know who is filming, where and when and to help keep the crew and public safe.
Risk Assessment
Filming in public requires permission from Cardiff Film Office. To apply, they will need a risk assessment for each of your locations as well as insurance information. The liability insurance is provided by University of South Wales and a risk assessment should be created and signed off by a supervisor.
We identified various potential hazzards filming around our chosen locaiton. These are identified in the risk assessment below. We filmed before this was agreed as we were not aware it was RA/permits were required, so this was produced retrospectively.
More audio
Modified the titles slightly
Applied colour grading to all clips
Exported in Rec.709 and such
Removed dirt flicker from Bute Park card
It's not great and literally nothing fancy:
Even if I am not happy with the result, I would argue that Nothing Fancy fits the brief as it does show a variety of different lighting and composition elements. As a first time using the z150, I would call it a success.
What have I learned from creating Nothing Fancy?
Bulky set-ups are bulky. Always check the audio yourself before you leave. Export your video in the same colour space you edit in otherwise it'll look different. Just because you are using a fancy cinema camera, doesn't make it a good video. Have a plan and stick to it, don't go on a recce the day before and then forget it all. Your lighting, composition and movement are all key parts in creating a film.
oh and backup the project
