THE TROVE
September 2024
Given the freedom to explore the museum by ourselves.
My flatmates and I came to the museum just two days before our trip. Anne was immediately drawn to the collection of Monet's work. She ran over to them. It made me realise the excitement that is inspired in people by art. I can't call myself a fan of theirs, but I can appreciate the value in their work.
The paintings also remind me of what my mum painted. She is a big fan of Monet too. She tried copying the bridge over the lily pond. The water colours and the style is so uniquely Monet that you could recognise it anywhere. When touring the museum with Ashton, I noticed we both found connections to childhood in different exhibits.
Recognising locations featured in Doctor Who.
The museum features multiple times in Doctor Who series 5. The begining of an era which feels like a fairytale...
In Vincent and The Doctor, Amy notices Sunflowers in the corner of her eye. I recall the camera following here through these doors, towards the painting hung on the wall.
There is similar framing here, now a different artwork, but the effect is the same. The vivid orange in the sunset caught my eye and drew me in. (edit, my memory of the scene isn't quite correct, however, the effect is the same)
Seeing a painting online or on television doesn't accurately communicate the true scale of the artwork. I was struck by the height and size of some of the older pieces.
This sense of scale continues throughout the whole gallery. The level of detail across different scales, whether on the wallpaper, or archways or strokes on a canvas. The height of the ceilings and overbearing doors that are heavy and awkward to manoeuvre. In our paired-tour, we wondered what the building was used for before it became a museum... it would not be out of place in a period drama, set in a grand hall or palace.
Don't shy away from big, bold political statements...
The monologue of text is accompanied by an audio recording. (insert video)
I questioned the poignancy of Keep Left. Pollitically, some would argue about the direction of the new governent and that they aren't doing enough to service those that elected them. The party isn't sticking to it's core principles of building a fairer, kinder and equal society; ideas typically associated with left-wing parties. A message to Keir Starmer, remember who elected you and the foundations that hold the party together.
