A MEDIA PRODUCTION RESOURCE
Q: What is the M.E list?
The ME list is a dive into my favourite themes, ideas and emotions within media.
TV programmes often have a longer overall runtime. One film may run for an hour but a programme could be 20 episodes long. This format allows me more time to explore the world the production creates. You have longer to connect to characters, to dive into each story. A good tv show creates a sandbox you can explore both on screen and beyond.
Science Fiction
Doctor Who / Travellers / Orphan Black
Thriller
Sitcom
The Big Bang Theory / Community
Collectable
DVD / Blu Ray / Expanded Media
Fandom
Fan-made and original content. Trailers, artwork, fiction + more.
The ability to be moved by what you watch. I am a deeply emotional person. Anything that is remotely poetic in the media I consume can set me off!
Jamie Magnus Stone (The Power of the Doctor)
Azhur Saleem (Doctor Who Flux)
Rachel Talalay (Heaven Sent, Face the Raven)
The acting power house that is Tatiana Maslany.
The ever-brilliant thirteenth Doctor herself, Jodie Whittaker.
Jodie Comer (Villanelle)
You could describe my style objectively, defined by a shallow depth of field and strong bokeh. I shoot as much video as I can wide open, usually at f1.4 with NDs to compensate in harsh, bright environments.
Shallow depth of field can be used to represent a dreamy or fantasy look.
I am often drawn to the score of a tv show.
My playlists usually contain at least one piece of music from Doctor Who.
Soundtrack can be used to invoke emotion, to create tension and callback to important events or character moments. Doctor Who makes great use of iconic themes and motifs that are instantly recognisable.
When the soundtrack from a series is hopefully released, you can listen to a suite or a whole album and feel like you are watching the show again.
Those moments when the main/titles theme plays in the episode. See Scorpion, Primeval even Doctor Who etc.
Having genuine physical reactions to the music.
I can become addicted to playing sections of a track on repeat; some fill me with excitement and others will bring me to tears.
Composer for Doctor Who, Murder is Easy, Steven
They are known for their experimental, electronic sounds.
THIRTEEN
The first piece of music composed by Segun for Jodie Whittaker's era of Doctor Who.
SHE'S THE DOCTOR
A reprise of Thirteen, the piece plays out through her regeneration.
"Of course she's okay. She's the Doctor" - the last lines spoken by Mandip Gill as Yaz, and the title for the track accompanying the last 10 minutes of Jodie Whittaker's last episode. A rollercoaster of emotion, from sadness, through heartbreak to hope. As the Thirteenth Doctor bursts into regeneration energy, Hollie Buhagair vocalises The Doctor's theme.
It perfectly encapsulates the joy and energy Jodie brought to the role. Hearing it never fails to bring me to tears.
A reprise of Thirteen, the first piece of music Segun composed for this era of the show. Poignant. Love it.
CYBERMASTERS (left)
The CyberMaster's theme, combining haunting drums with a regeneration motif.
YOU SHALL NOT DISRUPT OUR MISSION (right)
Reprise in the epic opening to the episode. A 7-minute suite.
In CyberMasters, Segun Akinola creates a theme combinig the motifs for the Timeless Child, Regeneration and The Cybermen. The version in You Shall Not Disrupt Our Mission (above) starts with the haunting, heavy drums of the Cybermen theme before building up to a moment around halfway through with the epic regeneration theme, accompanied with the terrifying line "We are more than Cybermen. We have evolved. We are your CyberMasters".
I often find myself playing this 30 second section on repeat. The music is able to invoke such a sense of power and adrenaline. The whole track is one epic suite from the cold open to The Power of The Doctor.
To me that is what makes a soundtrack great. The ability to re-listen to it whenever. Something that is iconic and brings you back into the episode. Goosebumps.

I like creating fan-made trailers for Doctor Who. The trailers seem to come together once sound effects have been added. A good sound design is important in TV and media.
Found Sounds
BBC Radiophonic Workshop - Delia Derbyshire etc. Delia was a pioneer of her time.
The friends and relationships I have made over the past few years have driven me to where I am now. The people who have come into my life, even if it was just for a few months have shaped who I am today. Whether it is someone I have worked with, or met online or by coincidence at an event - I never forget people. It is these connections that continue to drive and influence me.
Killing Eve
The visual style, the big bold fonts, the epic locations and the humour: who doesn't love a sapphic spy-thriller written / produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, showcasing what a powerhouse of acting both Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh are.
Some of my own trailers made in recent years. Challenges present them selves when there is a limited selection of clips to chose from. Most of these are made before the episodes air (as I like to make them seem official). There's something so fun about it!
For Space Babies, The Devils Chord and Boom, I recreated the BBC branding overlay (the orb and animated BBC text at the beginning).
